Chester Unitarians

Matthew Henry Chapel (Chester Unitarians) is a small fellowship without a building of its own.

In the three hundred and eight years of the Chapel's recorded history, it has had various names. Some of these names referred to the Chapel's site such as Crook's Lane, Trinity Lane, Crook Street, and Trinity Street; others indicated its non-conformist nature for instance The Protestant Dissenting Chapel, The Chester Meeting, and The Presbyterian Meeting; whilst others paid tribute to two Mr. Henry's Meeting and The Chapel where Mt Gardner Officates.

The congregation first officially described itself as Unitarian from the beginning of the nineteenth century and adopted the name Matthew Henry's Chapel (Unitarian) in the middle of that century. The origins of the dissenting opinion in Chester can, according to the Rev. Gordon be traced as far back as 1551 when Chester was already identified with dissent and one preacher was burnt, on the Castle grounds, for heresy. Chester was in the decade following 1580 the scene of a number of Presbyterian Preaching Exercises.
